I have never ridden, can I still go on a trek?
Yes. Beginners usually start with a half-day, but a whole day is perfectly possible.

Will we have a guide?
Most treks are guided, but some centres allow confident riders to go unaccompanied.

Are there more advanced treks available?
There are, but these are normally called hacks or trail rides. Hacks tend to be half- or whole day and can include gallops or even jumping. Trail rides last up to five days

How will the centre know what horse to give me?
Stables grade all riders on skill and experience before the trek starts. Beginners get quiet, dependable, ponies, while intermediate and advanced riders will have livelier mounts.

My partner doesn’t ride, I do – is this a problem?
It is fun to trek together and there are often opportunities for more experienced riders to canter while beginners ride at a more sedate pace
(but check in advance).

How old does a child have to be?
It depends on the child and the stables. Some centres let four year olds ride, others start at eight. But some centres will take younger children. Please ask.

What should I wear?
Mountain weather can change rapidly. Dress warmly and have some protection against rain. Shoes should have a low heel. The stable will provide safety gear.

Must I groom my mount?
Some centres have the horses ready, others let you fetch your own horse, help you groom it and tack up before the ride.

What is the insurance position in case of an accident?
All centres have insurance cover and are liable for any negligence, but ideally riders should also have their own cover (often already part of a household or holiday package).

Is there a weight limit?
This is usually 15 stone, but it can vary, depending on the centre and available horses.

Is there any other way of enjoying horses in the Park?
Yes, you can learn to carriage drive, watch trotting races or visit a horse sanctuary.
